How to Choose Between Different Types of Mouthwash

We all know there are three keys to good dental hygiene- brush, floss and mouthwash; but like toothbrushes and toothpastes there are many choices in mouthwash.  Mouthwash (or mouthrinse) is used for a variety of reasons such as reducing plaque, preventing tooth decay, freshening breath, and preventing or reducing gingivitis.  It’s important to remember when selecting a mouthwash to make sure and look for the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance, as they have been tested for their effectiveness and safety.

There are two main types of mouthwashes: Therapeutic and Cosmetic.

Therapeutic mouthwashes help reduce plaque, gingivitis, cavities, and bad breath. They contain fluoride to help prevent or reduce tooth decay.

Cosmetic mouthwashes can temporarily control or reduce bad breath and leave the mouth with a pleasant taste.  They don’t however fix with the causes of bad breath, kill the bacteria that cause bad breath; or help reduce plaque, gingivitis or cavities.

An additional type of mouthwash that has come on the scene in recent years is a Natural mouthwash.  Natural mouthwashes have become quite popular as an alternative to alcohol-based mouthwashes and contain no artificial dyes, sweeteners or preservatives.

Since mouthwash can be used to help treat many different oral hygiene issues, it’s always best to discuss with your dentist and find out what recommendation they have for you.  Whether you need help controlling gingivitis, preventing tooth-decay or you suffer from dry-mouth, Dr. Finkelstein is happy to review the options and make recommendations based on your individual dental needs!
