Xylitol
Xylitol is a natural sweetener derived from the fibrous parts of plants. It does not break down like sugar and can help keep a neutral pH level in the mouth. Xylitol is an alternative to fluoride, and it is used in treatments where fluoride would’ve been used.

Composite Restorations
Xylitol is a natural sugar, as opposed to an artificial sweetener. The importance of Xylitol in dental health is that it is non fermentable like other sugars, and does not produce lactic acid. Lactic acid is what eventually wears down and eats through the enamel (surface of teeth) and causes cavities. Additionally, the mouth will produce more saliva over time and bacteria will not be able to stick to the teeth, which naturally increases the Ph level inside the mouth and prevents cavities from forming.
At Plantation Dentist, we use Xylitol as a replacement on treatments where fluoride would have normally been used. This is not only to protect further, but also to build a stronger shield around your teeth for future potential issues.
Additionally, we also use Xylitol-based toothpaste at our practice, which will act as a re-enforcing layer on your teeth and prevent damage to your teeth. We highly recommend that you use Xylitol toothpaste at home, too!
