The manual tooth brush as we know it went on sale in the United States in 1938 and has not strayed far from its original concept. In the 1990’s its electric counterpart hit the scene and has had us wondering since which brush is better? Here are some pros and cons of each brush:
Electric Toothbrush:
Pros:
- Easy to use. An electric toothbrush is easy to use. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and move from tooth to tooth.
- Brush time. The built in timer will have your teeth clean in 2 minutes flat, which is doctor recommended.
- Better results. If you have dexterity issues, limited movement or are a “lazy brusher” you can benefit from the efficiency of electric.
- Fun for kids. The electric version makes for more fun in the bathroom in addition to regulated brushing time.
Cons:
- Expensive. Electric toothbrushes cost much more than manual and brush heads are an additional cost.
- Can break. With any electronic it can fail. Cautious handling helps.
- Your toothbrush will need to have batteries replaced or require being plugged into a charging station.
- Harder to travel with. Taking your electric toothbrush along will be a little more cumbersome. Don’t forget your charger.
Manual Toothbrush:
Pros:
- A manual toothbrush is minimal investment. Don’t forget to pick up a free one at your dental visit!
- You can find one easily at any grocery, big box store and even convenience store.
- Easy to carry. Keep one in your purse for an after lunch brush. Easy to travel with.
- No worries about charging or batteries.
Cons:
- No timer. Unlike the electric version, you will have to keep an eye on the clock for your 2-minute brushing duration.
- Increased work. It’s manual. You’ll have to brush with a short, vertical or circular motion.
Using the right toothbrush can make your daily oral care more effective and more enjoyable, but a toothbrush is a personal choice and only you can make the decision on which option best meets your dental needs. Maybe it’s electric or maybe it’s a hybrid approach of both, but no matter which toothbrush you decide to use, when it comes to oral care consistency is key. Following a routine of twice a day brushing and daily flossing is the single most important element in preventing bacterial buildup and the development of plaque. Also, don’t forget to replace your toothbrush or electric brush heads regularly!
