Why You Should Brush and Floss If You’re Trying to Get Pregnant

It’s probably no surprise that if your body is healthy, the odds are better that you can get pregnant when you’re ready. However, what might be news is that how well both men and women care for their oral health can have an impact on their ability to conceive.

In fact, over seven million Americans are affected by infertility, and about one in eight may have difficulty conceiving. Recent studies have revealed that the presence of gum disease in women can lengthen the time that it takes to conceive by an extra two months on average, increasing the span of time to approximately seven months rather than five.

In a separate study, researchers found that eight out of ten men who sought sperm analysis suffered from some kind of periodontal issue from mild to severe, and that a majority of those men had either low sperm count or no sperm count. Moreover, research has demonstrated that these gum issues are linked to a lack of success in implantation in in vitro fertilization and also in embryo development for those undergoing treatment for infertility.

In addition, even when you do manage to pregnant, the presence of gum disease can increase the risk of a premature delivery and low birth weight baby. So if you’re trying to conceive faster, concerned about increasing fertility, or are concerned about a healthy delivery of your baby, a visit to the dentist should be a priority.
