How to Have a Successful Dental Visit with Your Child

Having regular dental visits is one of the best things you can do for your child’s health. It’s important to find a child-friendly dentist who is great with your child, and it’s also good to know how to help your child have the most positive experience.

Taking your child along to your and other family members’ dental cleanings can help them feel comfortable and natural in the dental environment. Remember to only share positive remarks when you describe dental visits.

Communication is key, so discuss their upcoming visit, answer any question and help to allay any fears. Talk about the importance of keeping teeth and gums healthy. Explain that a dentist is a gentle, friendly doctor who can help take care of their mouth and let them know they can ask the dentist any questions they have. This can allow the dentist and your child to begin building a good relationship.

If your child still naps, try to schedule the appointment around his naptime. Plan to feed him a snack before the appointment so he isn’t hungry, but remember to brush afterward. A favorite toy brought along to hold may keep your child amused while in the waiting room and be a calming distraction during the visit.

Try to avoid making dental appointments right after a full day of school or camp as they may be tired and less cooperative. Always speak gently and soothing to help your child feel safe and at ease. If he is fearful, don’t hesitate to ask the dentist for advice.
